ProyectoMural

ProyectoMural is a creative placemaking project to install a mural in the South Pedestrian Railroad Tunnel of the Franklin Avenue Underpass starting on May 15, 2021. The mural will express cultural values and themes that emerged from a series of conversations between Latinx stakeholders and the artists they selected. Mecca Bend guided this innovative and artistic approach to bridging the gap between efforts to revitalize the Bend Central District and the members of the Latinx community who have a stake in it. 

Central Oregon LandWatch is the lead organization for this collaboration between Mecca Bend, the BCD Visionary Board, COCC’s ¡AVANZA! Program, and community partners. ProyectoMural is funded in part by an Arts Build Community Grant from the Oregon Arts Commission.

About the Project

Improving the Midtown Crossings is key to the Bend Central District’s transformation into a vibrant, healthy, and inclusive mixed-use neighborhood with safe connections between east and west. The Franklin Corridor is a key east-west connection between Downtown Bend and the Bend Central District with thousands of people walking and biking through it on a weekly basis despite a lack of signage, lighting, and connectivity.

A grassroots effort to reimagine this corridor as a safe, welcoming, and vibrant public space began several years ago when the late Kaycee Anseth partnered with Central Oregon LandWatch and the BCD Visionary Board to install her mural “Two for Joy” in the tunnel on the north side of the underpass. Before she passed away, Kaycee worked with Moey Newbold to apply for a grant from the Oregon Arts Commission for the next mural to be co-created by members of the Latinx community. 

This grant allowed Central Oregon LandWatch to partner with Mecca Bend to convene a diverse group of Latinx and indigenous stakeholders who live, work, and commute in the Bend Central District. This group selected two artists, Carly Vargas Garzon and Melinda Martinez, from the applicants who responded to the call for artists. The artists, stakeholders, and high school students from COCC’s ¡AVANZA! program participated in a series of conversations about art, culture, and place facilitated by an Art Therapist. The design of the mural that will be installed through ProyectoMural was created through this process.

ProyectoMural es un proyecto creativo de creación de espacios para instalar un mural en el Túnel del Ferrocarril Peatonal Sur del Paso Subterráneo de la Avenida Franklin a partir del 15 de mayo de 2021. El mural expresará valores culturales y temas que surgieron de una serie de conversaciones entre las partes interesadas latinx y los artistas seleccionados. Mecca Bend guió este enfoque innovador y artístico para cerrar la brecha entre los esfuerzos para revitalizar el Distrito Central de Bend y los miembros de la comunidad Latinx que tienen interés en él.

Central Oregon LandWatch es la organización líder de esta colaboración entre Mecca Bend, la Junta Visionaria de BCD y ¡AVANZA! De COCC. Programa y socios comunitarios. ProyectoMural está financiado en parte por un subsidio  comunitario de Arts Build de la Comisión de Artes de Oregon.

Sobre el Proyecto

Esta colaboración permitió a Central Oregon LandWatch asociarse con Mecca Bend para convocar a un grupo diverso de interesados latinos e indígenas que viven, trabajan y viajan diariamente en el Distrito Central de Bend. Este grupo seleccionó a dos artistas, Carly Vargas Garzón y Melinda Martínez, de los postulantes que respondieron a la convocatoria de artistas. Los artistas, las partes interesadas y los estudiantes de secundaria de ¡AVANZA! De COCC El programa participó en una serie de conversaciones sobre arte, cultura y lugar facilitadas por un terapeuta de arte. El diseño del mural que se instalará a través de ProyectoMural se creó a través de este proceso.
